“Venezia la Serenissima”: Sketches and Notes

The master-calligraphers will guide the participants to compose pages on Venice, with sketches, designs and writing.  The final result will be bound in the form of book-diary, which will show the collected impressions with rhythm and creativeness of each individual. Work will take place in the open air and in the studio, experimenting with both traditional and abstract handwriting techniques.

Laurie Doctor

Laurie Doctor is a painter and calligrapher whose work is in collections in the United States and Europe, including a recent acquisition of several works by the Berlin art museum, Akademie der Künste. Her work is based on language, image and contemplative practice. She teaches and creates spontaneous performance art at Naropa University, as well as offering workshops and lectures internationally. Her home is in a nature reserve outside Louisville, Kentucky.

Steven Skaggs

Steven Skaggs is a poet, typographer, calligrapher and researcher who lives in Louisville, Kentucky where he is Professor of Design at the University of Louisville. His typeface, Rieven, available through Delve Fonts, was recently awarded the Medal of Typographic Excellence in the TDC2 international competition. He has written widely on topics such as semiotics, calligraphy, graphic design and art. He has taught calligraphy as a fine art in witzerland, Germany, Canada and throughout the United States. Author of Logos–The Development of Visual Symbols (1994), Poems From Elsewhere (2006), his calligraphic fine artworks are included in the collections of the Klingspor Museum-Offenbach (Germany), the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry (Miami), and the Akademie Der Künste, Berlin.
