UPON WATER
workshop in water-based media
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This six-day intensive workshop explores water as a central theme in contemporary art practice. Looking at examples of artists throughout history, we’ll think about how water may address interests as broad as ancient Eastern philosophy and the pressing issues of our society today. We will use the water-based media of gouache, watercolor and acrylic paint to explore a variety of techniques that effectively suggest water as either a visual form or concept. We also will spend time outside the studio, observing our immediate surroundings and considering the role of water in Venice and the Venetian lagoon.
The program is designed for intermediate to advanced level participants who already have some familiarity with traditional water-based painting techniques and would like to further develop their creativity through new ideas and methods of image-making.
TECHNIQUES:
• Tinting paper / working with buckled paper;
• Effects of painting on vellum / acetate;
• Stretching paper in preparation for painting;
• Atmospheres and stains / wet-on-wet with spray bottles;
• Absorption versus resist; working with masking fluid and gesso ground;
• Water-based monotypes;
• Working with photographic transfers & appropriated images.
