Venice July Intensive Program

Printmaking, Drawing, and and Art History

This program, which is open to artists and aspiring artists at all levels of accomplishment, offers participants the opportunity for serious artistic development in drawing and printmaking influenced by the artistic and cultural resources of Venice and the surrounding area. Workshop and classroom facilities will be provided at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica di Venezia, located in the heart of Venice. Housing is also provided by the Scuola in private apartments located in Campo San Maurizio. The apartments are furnished with kitchens, bathrooms with showers, and laundry. Linens and wireless Internet DSL connection is also provided.

Academic Program and Cultural Activities

All program participants will take two 3-semester-hour courses. A choice of one studio course (Drawing-Venice as Source or Intaglio and Relief) and one Art History course (The Art of Venice and its Surrounding Cities) for a total of 6 s.h. of graduate or undergraduate credit. During the studio courses, each student will work at the appropriate level of accomplishment under the supervision of the program faculty director, Assistant Professor and Printmaking Area Coordinator Joseph D’Uva of Youngstown State University. Individual and group discussions/critiques, in addition to technical instruction, is scheduled daily throughout the trip.

Associate Professor Dr. Stephanie Smith, also of Youngstown State University, directs the participants’ art history and cultural program. This course combines lectures, visits to exhibits and museums, as well as participation in cultural events, such as the Festa del Redentore, within Venice. Weekly excursions outside of Venice feature the artistic offerings of Padua, Vicenza and Verona. Optional excursions to Trieste, Florence, and Mantua as well as Rome are possible for weekend excursions from Venice.
