August Workshop 2011

Blossoming; the idea of duration
and growth in image-making in the Venetian environment
Greg Murr / € 695,00 / 72 hours
August 3-13 2011

Fundamental to the act of making something is the component of duration. It takes time to construct, paint or otherwise render any thing out of any material. This passing of time is embedded in the resulting product, whether it be a picture, object, or experience. Duration as a concept is an austere and discrete narrative that underlies all phenomena and reveals itself via the change of anything from one phase to another.

Venice provides an extraordinary variety of resources through which we can explore the concept of duration. Evolving ideas and visions are embedded in everything from architecture to the forever mutating economic forces that guide commerce—even the natural habitat of the lagoon offers its own sense of temporal narrative.

This seminar investigates how we recognize, interpret and express duration as a subject within image-making. Examining Venice through the lens of the narrative, one rediscovers this extremely particular urban habitat and finds new ways of thinking about making art. Today’s professional artists, including those exhibiting at the concurrent Venice Biennale, will provide additional direction with respect to recording time. Course projects will include techniques in watercolor and acrylic painting, drawing and monotype printmaking. Participants will also develop an installation-oriented ‘work in progress,’ that will begin the first class day and evolve each day thereafter, through the duration of the course.
