con Jorge Schmeisser

  • 16 Aprile, 2005, dalle 10-13/14-18
  • April 16, 2005. 10am -1pm / 2-6pm

For this workshop, students will work with Jorg as he demonstrates various techniques and approaches for preparing plates for printing, both printing his plates in demonstrations and helping students print their own plates. The focus of this workshop will be showing various ways of wiping plates- the use of different materials like tarlatan, cloth and by hand, to ways of using clean and dirty tarlatans at different stages of the process to bring out all of the richness and detail etched into the copper plates.Jorg will also present a talk about the development of his work, in conjunction with an exhibition in the Scuola’s Galleria il Sotoportego, with photographs and etchings from his voyage to Antarctica, and travels throughout Japan.

Jorg Scmeisser was born in Pomerania in 1942, studied in Germany and Japan. For twenty years he was Head of Printmaking at the Canberra School of Art/Australian National University and is currently professor at the Kyoto City University of Arts. His first short visit to Venice – where he did one of his first etchings- dates back 40 years. The three weeks at the scuola he sees as an opportunity to prepare a new group of works on Venice.
Schmeisser has more than 150 solo exhibitions worldwide to his credit, is represented among others in the Collections of the Australian National Gallery, the British Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York. Acknowledged as a major artist he is also acclaimed as a teacher, fine draftsman and innovative printmaker. The works on show at the scuola focus on a journey to Antarctica and recent travels in Japan, showing a more experimental use of the etching medium, drawing their strength from the centuries old tradition and are at the same time fully in tune with the 21st century.
